As major brands enter the design and development cycle for AW 27/28, one trend has become undeniable: the blurring of boundaries is unstoppable.
Consumers are no longer satisfied with mere "yoga pants" or "cycling tights"—they crave "Hybrid Performance Wear" that seamlessly transitions across multiple settings: from early morning gym sessions to urban commutes, light hiking, or casual coffee meetups.
From a design and manufacturing perspective, three major shifts are reshaping product collections for the 27/28 season:
"Soft Utility" replaces Gorpcore : Heavy, rigid outdoor gear is fading out. The new trend combines technical protection (such as windproofing and temperature regulation) with ultra-soft, "second-skin" fabrics;
The rise of "Corps-Core" and "Micro-Mobility" : As cycling commutes and lightweight urban travel become daily habits, activewear requires understated yet high-performance features—such as reflective details, targeted ventilation panels, and wrinkle-resistant, resilient fabrics—to maintain a sophisticated look in city environments.
A blend of earth tones and modern accent colors : Key shades highlighted by WGSN (such as Russet—a deep, reddish-brown earth tone) and "quiet earth tones" are defining the season's style. We are moving away from the neon-heavy "gym aesthetic" toward refined, "quiet luxury" palettes suited to diverse lifestyles.
#ManufacturingChallenges: Creating a garment that offers the compression needed for cycling, the flexibility required for yoga, and the minimalist aesthetic for everyday wear demands advanced knitting engineering and innovative bonding techniques, rather than relying solely on traditional cut-and-sew methods. 👇
To all product directors and designers: When finalizing plans for the AW 27/28 collections, what is the biggest challenge you face in blending technical functionality with everyday aesthetics? Is it fabric hand-feel, compression elasticity, or balancing costs?
